Gorilla tracking is one of the most exciting activities you can ever take on, on any African safari. It is such a humbling experience to encounter the majestic Silverbacks and their families in the forested and mist mountain ranges of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Virunga Massif. Mountain Gorilla trekking ranks as one of the world’s premier and most rewarding wildlife encounters.
Mountain Gorillas are some of the world’s endangered species with their population estimated to be now over a 1000 individuals, a number indicating steady increase and positive conservation efforts. They are members of the world’s Great Apes with the others being the Chimpanzees and Orangutans. Mountain Gorillas are in two populations/groups; one in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park located in Southwestern Uganda, with over 400 individuals living in more than 12 habituated groups. The second population is found in the misty Virunga ranges, a physical landform that spreads across three National Parks in three countries that is; Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Volcanos National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo and the Virunga ranges protects more than 600 individuals.
A Gorilla family/group ranges from 5 or 8 to 30 individuals, comprising of Silverbacks with a dominant one, Black-backs, and fully grown females with their off-springs. The habitats of these sought after creatures, are steep and slippery terrains offering sheer adventure to trackers. The parks often receive rainfall and this explains the slippery nature of the terrain, and the Gorillas usually inhabit the upper slopes of these mountainous parks, therefore; it requires some good level of physical fitness to track them. The ever chilly weather and challenging terrain offers unrivaled ambience, serenity and experience to those seeking to meet these interesting humans in the wilds.
On your Mountain Gorilla tracking safari you will visit one of the habituated group in Bwindi or Volcanos National Park, and each family is tracked once a day by a maximum of 8 visitors in a group. Our Gorilla safaris/packages range from short tours of 1-3days of tracking only or long tours combined with other activities like game viewing, rafting, and birding among others.
